Chinchilla Diet
Pellets Most Chinchillas in the UK are fed on commercial Chinchilla Pellets. Some of the most popular brands are Charnwoods, Duggins and Harrisons. These are specially formulated to provide a good balanced diet for Chinchillas. Containing the correct proportions of nutrients. |
Hay Chinchillas also require a good quality hay. It should be yellowy green, smell fresh and be dust free. Timothy or Meadow hay is widely used in the UK and can be purchased from commercial suppliers or from good local farms. |
Water Tap water sufficient for human consumption is adequate to provide for your Chinchillas. Be carefull with overly hard water as it may cause a build up of residue in the watering equipment used. If you are not satisfied the water in your area is pure or clean enough then bottled distilled spring water can be used. |
Supplements Many breeders provide a good supplement for nursing mothers or Chinchillas recovering from illnes. These should be fed seperately from their normal feeding dish so they do not pull out their pellets in search for the supplement. |
Treats All treats must be given in moderation if at all. Chins are partial to the odd raisin, dried rasperry leaf or oats. |
| A good balanced diet of pellets, hay and water is sufficient to provide all the nutrients required for Chinchillas, adding treats and supplements in excess can complicate things and cause digestion problems.. |
